The most abundant isotope is 12C making up approximately 98.89 % of all carbon in nature.

The abundance of the stable isotope 13C is about 1.11 %, whereas the radioactive 14C is present in only very small quantities of 1.176 x 10-12 atoms per atom 12C.

The existence of 14C in nature and its use for dating was first demonstrated by Willard Libby ( 1946 ) who received the Nobel Prize in chemistry for his investigations.

And indeed :

Where the microorganisms only found minimum amounts of sulfate available, the lab cultures retained amounts of methane that were enriched with the lighter isotope carbon 12.

Previous determinations of its half-life varied strongly between 124000 years and 1130000 years.

In order to be able to come to a more accurate conclusion here as to how long nuclear waste which contains this isotope will probably radiate, researchers from various institutes have joined forces:

Scientists from the PTB, the Lehrstuhl für Radiochemie (Institute for Radiochemistry) of the TU Munich, the Institut für Transurane (Institute for Transuranium Elements) in Karlsruhe and the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villingen (Switzerland) have now redetermined the half-life of 79selenium with a clearly improved measurement uncertainty.

In the case of suspected metastasis or tumors that frequently metastasize, such as bronchial carcinomas ( lung cancer ), positron emission tomography ( PET ) is also used at the RPTC in combination with a CT device ( the combination is referred to as PET-CT ).

For this procedure, the patient is injected with contrast medium marked with a short-lived radioactive isotope. This enables both precise tumor localization ( CT ) and identification of metabolically active tumor fractions ( with the isotope marking areas of increased metabolic activity in the tumor or metastasis ) to be accomplished in a single session.

Natural uranium contains circa 0,7 % of the isotope 235U, the rest of 99,3 % is the isotope 238U.

For the use in a research reactor one has to enrich the 235U-component in a complicated procedure to a concentration of approximately 20 %; the rest remains the isotope 238U, which does not fission.

Nuclear fuel with less than 20 % of 235U-component is called LEU ( low-enriched uranium ), fuel with more than 20 % is called HEU ( high-enriched uranium ).

To do so they look at the molecular structure of water since not all water molecules are the same.

One molecule with the hydrogen atom replaced by the heavier isotope deuterium faces 6400 “normal” representatives of the molecule on earth.

“This proportion could give us information about the origin of the earthly water”, explain Axel Korth and Urs Mall who work at the MPS and are co-authors of the new study.

The solar wind, the continuous particle stream from the Sun, reflects this ratio.

However, for a limited time, regions on the Sun can emit particles with a greatly increased concentration of the rare helium isotope.

"Apparently, there is a mechanism on the Sun that accelerates helium 3 much more effectively into space than other particles”, Bučík explains.

A Type Ia supernova ( SNIa ) is believed to be the thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf star - the stellar remnant of a normal star, such as our Sun, after the star has exhausted its hydrogen fuel.

Such a white dwarf consists mainly of carbon and oxygen - the ashes of hydrogen and helium burning - and during the supernova explosion large amounts of a radioactive nickel isotope (56Ni) are produced.

The subsequent decay chain from nickel to cobalt and eventually iron (see Fig.
