Instructions for new OpenDict authors

The list of headwords contains many verbs in the infinitive form. This means therefore that an inflected verb form should not be listed as a headword, e.g. schien should not be entered as a new headword when there is an entry for scheinen.

When you enter a new verb in the dictionary please always use the infinitive form, e.g. spielen, tanzen, singen.

To create the new entry with as much precision and detail as possible click Optional Details. You will then be given additional details like subject area, style, and region that you can add to your entry.

Grammatical and syntactic details like gender, number, style, subject area, and regional restrictions should come after the headword and not be separated with commas. Please click Optional Details to add more information.

In the case of German nouns the article is not entered in front of the headword (*das Fenster), but – via the Optional Details button – after it: Fenster, nt.

When entering phrases, example sentences, and sayings please use standardised abbreviations like jd = jemand, sb = somebody, etc. (see also Help).

Please use only the new German spellings for German words.

Before saving your entry you can use the Preview function to see what it looks like. To save your entry click Save.
