In Chapter I, we seek to clarify the theme of religious “ monotheism ” as it is understood in various contexts of modern political philosophy.

We are aware of the evolution that has resulted in a highly differentiated spectrum of theoretical positions nowadays, ranging from the classical background of so called humanistic atheism to more recent forms of religious agnosticism and political laicism.

Our reflection seeks first of all to show that the notion of monotheism, which is certainly significant in the history of our culture, is nevertheless too generic when it is used as an indication of equivalence between the historical religions which confess the oneness of God (namely Judaism, Islam and Christianity).

tending to scepticism, agnosticism and nihilism.

Postmodernism and deconstructionism ? portrayed as the upturning of values by Max Scheler, a machine for the creation Gods by Henri Bergson and as the fall of the Occident by Oswald Spengler ? are two symptoms of a crisis in the Occident.

The Holy Father :

“ On the one hand Cardinal Newman was above all a modern man, who lived the whole problem of modernity; he faced the problem of agnosticism, the impossibility of knowing God, of believing.

He was a man whose whole life was a journey, a journey in which he allowed himself to be transformed by truth in a search marked by great sincerity and great openness, so as to know better and to find and accept the path that leads to true life.

Papst Benedikt XVI. :

Anyone who lives and proclaims the faith of the Church is on many points out of step with the prevalent way of thinking, even in our own day.

Today ’ s regnant agnosticism has its own dogmas and is extremely intolerant regarding anything that would question it and the criteria it employs.

Therefore the courage to contradict the prevailing mindset is particularly urgent for a Bishop today.
