Zu den 22 pazifischen Inselstaaten und Territorien gehören mehr als 200 gebirgige Vulkaninseln und etwa 2.500 flache Inseln und Atolle.
Die Ausschließlichen Wirtschaftszonen (AWZ oder 200-Meilen-Zonen) der fünf an diesem Projekt beteiligten Länder Fidschi, Kiribati, Salomonen, Tonga und Vanuatu im Südpazifik umfassen 7,5 Millionen Quadratkilometer und somit die 21-fache Fläche der Bundesrepublik Deutschland.

The 22 Pacific island states and territories include more than 200 mountainous volcanic islands and approximately 2,500 flat islands and atolls.
The exclusive economic zones (EEZ or 200-nautical-miles zones) of the five islands involved in this project in the South Pacific – Fiji, Kiribati, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu – cover an area of 7.5 million square kilometres, 21 times the size of the Federal Republic of Germany.

www.giz.deVorgehensweise Das Programm unterstützt die Regionalorganisationen Secretariat of the Pacific Community ( SPC ), das Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environmental Programme ( SPREP ) sowie die Melanesian Spearhead Group ( MSG ) dabei, ihre Informationsangebote, Beratungsleistungen und Fortbildungen zum Thema Klimawandel zu verbessern.
Die Regierungen der Inselstaaten werden bei der Erstellung von Strategien beraten, die die wichtigsten Wirtschaftsbereiche auf die erwarteten Klimaereignisse vorbereiten.
Da sich der Klimawandel auf fast alle Sektoren wie Landwirtschaft, Tourismus und Fischerei auswirkt, werden vorhandene Entwicklungspläne und politische Richtlinien auf ihre Klimafestigkeit überprüft und entsprechend angepasst.

The governments of the island states are advised on developing strategies to prepare the key sectors of the economy for the anticipated climate-related events.
As climate change impacts almost all sectors, such as farming, tourism, fisheries, water and health, existing development plans and policy guidelines are being reviewed for climate appropriateness and adjusted accordingly.

Ausgangssituation Die pazifischen Inselstaaten sind besonders anfällig für die negativen Auswirkungen des Klimawandels.
Bereits heute leiden die Bewohner vieler Inseln unter extremen Wetterereignissen wie Wirbelstürmen und Überschwemmungen, der Erosion der Küsten und, insbesondere auf Atollen, unter Wasserknappheit.

Context The Pacific island states are especially vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.
Today inhabitants of many islands are already enduring extreme weather conditions such as hurricanes, droughts or heavy rainfall and floods, coastal erosion and – especially in atolls – water shortages.
www.giz.deDer steigende Meeresspiegel, höhere Temperaturen, veränderte Niederschlagsmuster und eine Zunahme von extremen Wetterereignissen wie tropischen Wirbelstürmen und Fluten gehören zu den Folgen der Erderwärmung, die die Entwicklung der pazifischen Inseln gefährden.
Die ohnehin schwierige Situation der kleinen Inselstaaten, geprägt von starker Übernutzung natürlicher Ressourcen, begrenzten Binnenmärkten und großen Entfernungen zu Exportmärkten, wird durch den Klimawandel zusätzlich belastet.
Aufgrund der besonderen Herausforderungen durch den Klimawandel berät die GIZ in Zusammenarbeit mit drei Regionalorganisationen derzeit insgesamt zwölf Inselstaaten im Rahmen der Projekte:

The already difficult situation of small island states, with over-exploitation of natural resources, limited domestic markets and enormous distances to their export markets, are further aggravated by climate change.
Because of the special challenges posed by climate change, GIZ is currently working with three regional organisations to advise 12 island states in the following projects:
