It is possible to find metastatic cancer at the same time as the primary tumor, or even months or indeed years, later.

When a second tumor is found in a patient who has already been treated for cancer in the past, this is more often likely to be a metastasis rather than a new primary tumor.

In the case of suspected metastasis or tumors that frequently metastasize, such as bronchial carcinomas ( lung cancer ), positron emission tomography ( PET ) is also used at the RPTC in combination with a CT device ( the combination is referred to as PET-CT ).

For this procedure, the patient is injected with contrast medium marked with a short-lived radioactive isotope. This enables both precise tumor localization ( CT ) and identification of metabolically active tumor fractions ( with the isotope marking areas of increased metabolic activity in the tumor or metastasis ) to be accomplished in a single session.

Cancer in general becomes incurable when the cancer cells develop the capacity for invasion into adjacent tissues, and metastasis to distant organs and seeding of new tumors therein.

Thus discovering mechanisms of invasion and metastasis and applying such knowledge of mechanism to the development of effective therapies that block these lethal processes is one of the most important agendas for cancer research.

Unlike a healthy cell, programmed to multiply in a finite manner and then die, the tumor cell becomes virtually immortal: it develops and divides in a completely aberrant pattern and never dies.

With rare exception, the only human cancers that can be cured are those which are localized and amenable to surgical resection.
