In the Ottoman period ( 1300-1920 ) was the only Christian minorities such as Greeks and Armenians need to produce against a higher tax levy wine.

In the Tanzimat Period ( Tanzimat reform = ) was from the mid-19th Century, the vineyards and revived exports increased - due to the Phylloxera in Europe - until the beginning of the 20th Century to 30 million liters annually.

After the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 large areas of land, among others, Greece had to be surrendered and the bulk of the important wine-growing Greek minority left the country, there was again a decline.

The author of the book, Abdullah Cevdet ( b. 1869 ), trained as a doctor and graduated from the Royal School of Medicine of the Ottoman Empire.

He was clearly a radical figure who felt close to the Westernisation movement and together with his friends he was the first to systematise specific modes of thought after the administrative and political reforms (Tanzimat) of 1839 in the Empire.

As Karamustafa notes:

In der Tanzimat-Periode wurde ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts der Weinbau wiederbelebt und der Export stieg - bedingt durch die Reblaus-Katastrophe in Europa - bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts auf 30 Mio Liter jährlich.

Nachdem beim Frieden von Lausanne 1923 große Landflächen unter anderem an Griechenland abgetreten werden mussten und der Großteil der für den Weinbau wichtigen griechischen Minderheit das Land verließ, kam es neuerlich zu einem Niedergang.
