Between 2005 and 2012, the forest cover declined by up to 0.46 % per annum due to agricultural expansion and energy production.

It is estimated that half of Africa ’ s biomass carbon losses derive from deforestation in the SADC region.

In response to this, in 2011 a SADC support programme on REDD + was developed.

Consequently, the country loses two per cent of its forests every year.

This is accompanied by reductions in the fertility of the soil, biodiversity and the benefits that the ecosystem provides, for instance water regulation and carbon storage.

The population is more vulnerable to natural disasters, climate change adaptation is becoming more difficult and greenhouse gas emissions are increasing as a result of deforestation.

Soils are the largest reservoirs in the terrestrial carbon cycle and function as carbon sinks.

There is three times as much carbon contained in them as in vegetation and twice as much as in the atmosphere.

However, if land is used unsustainably, this storage function is disturbed and carbon is released into the atmosphere.

Tanja Gönner, Chair of the GIZ Management Board, drew attention to a resource that is often neglected – soil :

‘ We need fertile soil not only for food security, but also as a means for storing carbon and water. ’

The concept behind NEWAPP is that wet biomass can be a resource more than a waste, and does not need to be disposed of in the costly and inefficient way it is nowadays.

The alternative, which NEWAPP introduces, is to create a continuous system which will allow to recover carbon in an energy efficient HTC (Hydrothermal carbonization) process, producing tailor made products.

HTC consists in applying high temperatures and pressures to biomass in the presence of water, which results in two main products:
