Man has been occupied with coding techniques for language and writing for thousands of years.

The oldest, and also the simplest, technique is Atbash, a Hebraic cipher (600 BC) which operates with a reversed alphabet.

Julius Caesar also invented his own coding technique, the Caesar Code, so that messages and reports could not be read by the enemy.

If art communicates through space and time, it can be said that One Hotel closes the temporal gap between the four decades that separate Szeemann ’s exhibition from this thirteenth edition of documenta directed by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev.

Once lost and now temporarily regained through the work of Garcia Torres, the One Hotel serves as a cipher in the reading of the transformation of art and the world from the 1970s to now, distilling a fundamental crisis of temporality embodied in the rise of the notion of the “contemporary.”

It also closes what at first may seem the untenable spatial gap between Kassel, Kabul, and Bamiyan.

Claudia Larcher ’s video animation, with photos and moving image edited together and accompanied by a soundtrack with a discomforting drone, uncovers the eerie aspects of everyday things.

The banality of an evil that manifests itself in ciphers and intimations on the periphery of our perception and communicates a feeling of transcendental homelessness.

The perspective of rooms is shifted and they are bizarrely edited into one other.
