The RUB team combined the use of three biophysical methods - infrared spectroscopy, computer simulations and fluorescence measurements - and came to the surprising conclusion that two Ras molecules form a pair to take an upright position on the membrane.

Using time-resolved infrared spectroscopy, they measured the structural changes in the bacterial membrane protein MsbA and its interaction partner ATP.
The researchers led by Prof. Dr. Eckhard Hofmann and Prof. Dr. Klaus Gerwert from the Biophysics Department report on the results in the current issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
aktuell.ruhr-uni-bochum.deder Deutschen Gesellschaft für Kristallographie ( DGK ) wurde deshalb mit dem Ziel gegründet, als Ansprechpartner für NMR-spektroskopische Fragestellungen zur Verfügung zu stehen, diese Methode transparenter zu machen, ihre Stärken als sinnvolle Ergänzung zu anderen strukturaufklärenden Methoden zu präsentieren und damit innerhalb der DGK einer breiten Masse von Wissenschaftlern in der kristallographischen Forschung näher zu bringen.
Auf den letzten Jahrestagungen hat sich jedoch gezeigt, dass durch den Themenschwerpunkt „Kristallographie und Spektroskopie“ auch die Kollegen, die andere spektroskopische Methoden anwenden, wie z.B. Mößbauerspektroskopie, Infrarotspektroskopie, EXAFS, XANES, etc. sich sehr aktiv in diese Mikrosymposien einbrachten.

Das erlaubt, Interaktionen zwischen Molekülen mittels Infrarotspektroskopie zeitaufgelöst bis auf einzelne Atome genau zu verfolgen.
Das Verfahren setzen sie im EU-Projekt „Kinetics for Drug Discovery, K4DD“ ein, in dem Wissenschaftler das Zusammenspiel von Arzneistoffen und ihren Interaktionspartnern ergründen.
