Kontinentale Flutbasalte (KFB) sind große magmatische Ereignisse bei denen große Magmenvolumen von ungefähr 106-107 km3 vorwiegend basaltischer Zusammensetzung in geologisch kurzen Zeiträumen von ungefähr 1 Millionen Jahren (Ma) eruptiert werden.
Die Eruptionsraten (Volumen pro Zeit) von Flutbasalten in der geologischen Vergangenheit sind deutlich größer als bei rezent beobachteten Eruptionen und haben somit einen möglicherweise entscheidenden Einfluß auf die Umwelt.

Continental flood basalt (CFB) eruptions are major volcanic events, in which large volumes of basaltic lava (106-107 km3) are erupted rapidly (within about 1 million years).
The inferred eruption rates of CFB are far greater than occur presently on Earth, and CFB appear to have had important enviromental effects - most are associated in time with mass extinctions in the fossil record.
