Den Anlass für die Wallfahrt nach Riffian gibt eine aus Stuck gefertigte Skulptur der Mater Dolorosa , der schmerzensreichen Mutter , in der Mitte des Altars über dem Tabernakel .
Erstmals erwähnt wurde eine Kirche zur Verehrung der Schmerzensmutter im Jahr 1310, als die Marienverehrung von Riffian offiziell von vier Bischöfen anerkannt wurde.
