Die Bochumer Soziologie verbindet die Sicht auf einzelne Handelnde und soziale Gruppen ( Mikrosoziologie ) mit der Betrachtung ihrer sozialen Verflechtungen, Organisationen und Netzwerke ( Mesosoziologie ) und der Analyse gesamtgesellschaftlicher Strukturen, Institutionen und Wandlungsdynamiken ( Makrosoziologie ).
Dabei stehen die Themen Arbeit und Wirtschaft, Soziale Ungleichheit und Geschlecht, Stadt und Region, Familie, Organisation und Partizipation, Migration, Transnationalisierung und gesellschaftliche Entwicklung im Vordergrund.

The Sociology department in Bochum integrates the view of individuals in their social context onto the meso-level of institutions, organisations and networks and onto the macro-level.Thus the change through the development into a services and knowledge society and globalisation / transnationalisation is investigated.
