Vor allem Erzherzog Ferdinand II. ( 1529-1595 ), der das - auf einer Anhöhe im Süden Innsbrucks gelegene - Schloss Ambras für seine Frau Philippine Welser zu einem prächtigen Renaissance-Schloss ausbauen ließ und dort umfangreiche Kunst- und Kuriositätensammlungen anlegte, die auch heute noch zu den schönsten „ Wunderkammern “ zählen, erwies sich als bedeutender Förderer der Kunst.

Im 17. Jahrhundert gelangte das höfische Musikleben mit Künstlern wie Johann Stadlmayr und Marc Antonio Cesti zu voller Blüte.

Als heutige Entsprechung dieser Epoche können die im Sommer stattfindenden Innsbrucker Festwochen gelten, die mit Konzerten auf Schloss Ambras, im Hofgarten und an historischen Plätzen sowie den ebenso leicht wie exquisit inszenierten Barockopern Innsbruck zu einem wesentlichen europäischen Zentrum Alter Musik gemacht haben.

This is especially true of Archduke Ferdinand II. ( 1529 – 1595 ), who – on a hill to the south of Innsbruck – had Ambras Castle renovated into a splendid Renaissance castle for his wife Philippine Welser, and laid out extensive collections of art and curiosities there, which are still amongst some the most beautiful ‘ Wunderkammern ’ today, thus demonstrating that he was a significant promoter of the arts.

In the 17th century, courtly musical life with artists such as Johann Stadlmayr and Marc Antonio Cesti really flourished.

A parallel to this era today might be the Innsbruck festival weeks which take place in the summer, with concerts in Ambras Castle, in the Hofgarten and in the historic squares, as well as the baroque operas staged in Innsbruck which are as serene as they are exquisite, which turn this area into a real European centre for Old Music.
