- A Basque town destroyed by German bombers fighting on the Nationalist side in the Spanish Civil War in April 1937. Guerra Civil. The world was shocked at the slaughter of civilians. Guernica (Gernika) is the site of the ancient Basque parliament and of the oak tree, the árbol de Guernica, beneath which Spanish kings traditionally swore to uphold Basque privileges or fueros. Argentina achieved independence in 1816. Simón Bolívar of Caracas led a freedom movement that was to sweep South America and earned him the title El Libertador. By 1840 all the mainland Spanish colonies were independent. Others who played a crucial roles in the independence struggles of Spain's colonies during the nineteenth century include Hidalgo, Morelos and Guerrero (Mexico), Sucre and Miranda (Venezuela, Peru), San Martín, Brown and Belgrano (Argentina), O'Higgins, San Martín (Chile), Céspedes and Martí (Cuba).
- A fiesta in Spain can be a day of neighborhood celebrations, a larger event for a town or city, or a national holiday, to commemorate a saint's day or some historical event. For example, Madrid has the fiestas de San Isidro, in honor of its patron saint. Other famous Spanish holidays include the Fallas in Valencia, the Sanfermines in Pamplona, and the Feria de Sevilla.
They can last for a week or more, during which everyday life is often interrupted. Classes in schools may stop and banks, stores, and post offices alter their opening hours. There are often bullfights and dancing to live bands and people eat and drink plentifully.
- A popular celebration in Mexico and Central America between December 16 and Christmas Day to commemorate the journey of Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. It consists of a procession of models of religious figures that people carry on their shoulders, asking for shelter as they go by. The figures have their origin in an Aztec celebration, adapted to Christian tradition.
Generally one family takes charge of organizing the models, and offers its house as the last of nine posadas. Other groups form, one of which goes from house to house with the figures, asking for shelter. It is turned away at each house. At the last house, the figures are taken in and put on an altar. The celebrations continue with food and drink, singing and dancing and end with a piñata.
