Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on the banning of exports and safe storage of metallic mercury [first reading] - Adoption (LA + S) (a) of a common position (b) of the Council's reasons - Statement
www.mpg.deWhen the Dutch physicist Heike Kamerlingh Onnes discovered this effect in 1911 in mercury, he initially believed that his measuring instruments were faulty, before he became aware of the significance of his monumental discovery.
“Normal” conductors such as mercury or lead must be cooled down to temperatures near absolute zero at minus 273.16 degrees Celsius in order to become superconducting.
It was therefore a sensation when, in 1986, Johannes Georg Bednorz and Karl Alexander Müller presented a ceramic material that already became superconducting at minus 248 degrees Celsius.

www.uni-heidelberg.de“ Sufficient computing capacity made our approach realisable for the first time, and we were able to demonstrate that the relativistic effects are critically important for the simulation of mercury materials.
Without these effects the melting point of crystalline or solid mercury is about 105 degrees Celsius higher, and it would t be liquid at room temperature, but solid ”, explains Wormit.

www.io-warnemuende.deMercury originates from natural sources and is additionally released to the environment by fossil fuel burning and industrial processes.
As elemental mercury ( Hg0 ) it is distributed globally, thereby slowly oxidized and then entrained into the sea by wet and dry deposition and by river drainage.
But the sea also constitutes an important source of mercury ( Selin et al., 2008 ).

The meat of pilot whales for example contains such high concentrations of quicksilver that its consumption is not advisable.

www.www.margitatzler.atThe ( often illegal ) gold mining uses quicksilver, because of which vast regions today are not green any more but deserted, dry, dead.
Also the rivers and fish (originally main alimentation of the locals) have been contaminated by quicksilver.

www.german-architects.comManufacturers make massive investments in new technologies that can do both : generate light and save energy nonetheless.
In recent years, this has been made possible by the so-called energy-saving lamp; but with its components partly being made of pollutants such as quicksilver it never really made the breakthrough.
The LED seems to be beneficial, because it is less complex regarding its structure and additionally has a considerably higher efficiency than the energy-saving lamp.
