Einem Gutachter waren identische und gespiegelte sogenannte „patch clamp“-Spuren in verschiedenen Abbildungen aufgefallen.
Im Oktober 2012 informierte Hoppe die DFG über das schriftliche Geständnis ihres früheren Mitarbeiters Rottländer, mit dem dieser einräumte, in zwei der betroffenen Publikationen bewusst und systematisch elektrophysiologische Spuren gefälscht zu haben.
