On Tuesday 8th of May, however, the four teams of Solar Impulse’s Dübendorf site all came together to witness the first structural integrity test for what will become HB-SIA’s big brother.

The first of a series of tests was done on the gondola - the part which carries the motor, the batteries and supports the airplane’s propeller.

Wenn man sich durch die Schiebetore des Hangars zwängt, sieht man einzelne Flugzeugteile herumliegen, vereinzelte Arbeitsplätze in verschiedenen Ecken des loftähnlichen Raums und konzentriert und effizient arbeitende Ingenieure, die in den Räumlichkeiten umhergehen und alle auf ihre jeweiligen Aufgaben fokussiert sind.

Doch am Dienstag 8. Mai kamen die vier Teams von Solar Impulse am Standort Dübendorf zusammen, um beim ersten Struktur- und Integritätstest des Flugzeugs dabei zu sein, das zum grossen Bruder der HB-SIA werden soll.

Die erste Testreihe wurde an der Gondel durchgeführt – jenem Teil, der das Triebwerk trägt und an dem der Propeller des Flugzeugs befestigt ist.
