- The Italian police was organized on military lines from 1919 and was called the Corpo delle guardie di Pubblica Sicurezza (PS) (Guards of public safety), with administrative headquarters in the capital cities of each province (questure) and offices in districts and smaller centres (commissariati). It was demilitarized and made more democratic internally in the 1981 reforms and there are now many women working as agents and officials. Its present title is the Polizia di Stato (State police) and it continues to work alongside the Carabinieri when performing its duties regarding public safety, although the Carabinieri have offices in more places.

- A corps of the Italian army, founded in 1814, with the tasks of guaranteeing the safety of citizens and their property and ensuring that State laws are observed. Because of their proverbial faithfulness to the State, the body is called the Fedelissima (ie the most faithful part of the armed forces). As well as being a military police force and responsible for public safety, the carabinieri also function as judiciary police. They are much more widespread throughout Italian territory (even having a presence in small villages) than the Police.
