- Spain's two state-run television stations. TVE was founded as a state monopoly in 1956. The advent of private television in 1989 meant that it was forced to compete. TVE2 became a minority channel, featuring cultural programs. TVE1 and 2 fund themselves and other public services, such as the radio station Radio Nacional de España, with advertising.

- Radio broadcasting in Spain began in the 1920s. The state-run Radio Nacional de España (RNE) was established during the Civil War. There are many private radio stations and they compete fiercely.
