- The president of the Spanish central government and the equivalent of the Prime Minister in the UK. Each party running for power in Spain nominates a person, usually the party leader, to become the president if that party wins the elections. He is appointed for a four-year term, and may be reelected in the next general election. However, the Congreso de los Diputados can pass a vote of censure on him, forcing him to resign and call an early election.

- En EEUU se celebran elecciones para ocupar el cargo de Presidente President, para llenar ambas cámaras del Congreso Congress y cargos a nivel local y estatal. Los candidatos se presentan ya sea con el apoyo del Partido Republicano Republican Party o del Partido Demócrata Democratic Party. El que desee presentarse como independiente, puede hacerlo elevando una petición con firmas que la apoyen. La campaña electoral es extremadamente costosa por lo que los candidatos adinerados poseen una gran ventaja. Las elecciones presidenciales se celebran cada cuatro años. A principios del año en que hay elecciones, los partidos preseleccionan a sus candidatos mediante una serie de primarias primary - primary election celebradas en cada estado. La selección final de los candidatos para Presidente y Vicepresidente se efectúa en la convención o congreso que cada partido (party convention) celebra en los meses de julio y agosto. El Presidente es elegido en noviembre mediante el sistema de colegios electorales Electoral College. Menos del 50% de norteamericanos mayores de 18 años acude a votar en las elecciones presidenciales, y un porcentaje aún menor en otras elecciones.
En el Reino Unido, las elecciones generales deben celebrarse por ley, cada cinco años. Sin embargo el Primer Ministro (prime minister) puede convocar a elecciones anticipadas si parece que tiene buenas posibilidades de triunfar. Siempre tienen lugar un jueves. En el Reino Unido hay 659 circunscripciones electorales (constituencies), cada una de las cuales elige un parlamentario MP - Member of Parliament. El sistema electoral que se aplica es el first-past-the-post system, es decir que se resulta elegido por mayoría relativa. El líder del partido que obtiene el mayor número de escaños, pasa a ser el Primer Ministro y forma el nuevo gobierno. Muchos se oponen a este sistema y sostienen que Gran Bretaña debería adoptar el de representación proporcional (proportional representation), como ya se ha hecho, con algunas modificaciones, para las elecciones del Parlamento Europeo y de las asambleas descentralizadas → devolution.
